Volvo V50 (04 - 12)

It isn’t often that an estate outshines a saloon but in the case of the V50 that can be said to be the case. Volvo really do make some of the best estates/tourers around. Like most Volvos, this has the trademark comfortable and spacious cabin. Being an estate it also has one of the biggest boots in class. They also kept a close eye on efficiency when building this car, as it comes with low emissions versions. It is well worth a look. It is well kitted out too; there’s a tonne of high-tech gear which is uncomplicated to use. It handles really well, the steering feels light and the excellent suspension mean the drive is assured and solid even on rough surfaces.

• There were complaints about the 6-speed manual; of it slipping into reverse instead of 1st gear
